Under the label "Checkpoint", the AIDS help centres in Baden-Württemberg offer anonymous tests not only for HIV but also for other sexually transmitted infections.

The tests are accessible and take place under high hygienic conditions. Usually, a small prick in the finger is sufficient when taking blood. The result of the HIV test will be available within a few minutes. The results for other sexually transmitted infections (STI for short) may take slightly longer. This is always preceded by a detailed counselling interview in which the counsellors also discuss risk management. An annual check is recommended for men who have sex with men. If you frequently change sexual partners, getting tested every three to six months it is recommended.

The term "checkpoint" is used in many large German cities and also in most other countries to refer to community-based HIV/STI testing consultations or health centres. Early detection of sexually transmitted infections (STI) usually enables either a cure (including syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, hepatitis C) or at least treatment (HIV, hepatitis B), which prevents the progression of the disease and late-stage effects such as cancer or organ damage. In addition, effective treatment significantly reduces the risk of transmission. This requires that people, especially those at increased risk of infection, have access to counselling, testing, treatment and care.

Of the 12 independent HIV/STI counselling centres that are members of Aidshilfe Baden-Württemberg, all of them offer regular testing consultations. This offer supplements the comprehensive testing provided by the public health service, because AIDS support associations and comparable institutions have good access to important target groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM), for example, due to special opening hours and their volunteer staff.
